This video clip is really mislabeled as Police Brutality for several reasons considering that it is a security guard, and he uses the “Gentle Art” to detain the suspect. The security guard uses the “Rear Naked Choke” that is taught in Gracie Jiu-Jitsu. Choking can be dangerous, but i believe, when done correctly, there is little or no risk involved. This is simply my opinion on the dangers of choking based on my twelve years of training Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and seeing many people rendered unconscious due to not giving up. It is also my opinion that I would much rather be choked out than have someone beat me into submission or crank on a joint lock that may break a bone or tear tendons. I am well aware that many states don’t allow chokes to be used by police officers due to the danger that they pose if you are unskilled and and have no awareness of the conscious or unconscious state of a suspect. Also, I do recognize that many situations could be handled by utilizing better communication skills and negotiating. Ultimately, if we train people to use Gracie Jiu-Jitsu and its gentle approach, I believe that we will find that less and less situations turn to violence. In the meantime, I will continue to support Law Enforcement agencies world wide by introducing and defending the effectiveness of “The Gentle Art” of Jiu-Jitsu.
